District 50 hosts Unified Sports Day for special education students | News

Wednesday’s sunny and heat climate was excellent for Greenwood County School District 50’s Unified Sports Day occasion.

The occasion is for special education students, who spent just a few hours on the Emerald High soccer subject taking part in basketball, soccer, soccer and observe, all with a dance break inbuilt.

Jarad Jeter, behavioral companies lead with the district, stated the day is a method for the district’s special education division to provide students the possibility to train behaviors in a productive method. The hope is that sooner or later, the district can have inclusive groups the place students in special education are concerned in athletics and within the division.

“This is our first event and we’re really just trying to get everyone together to have a fun day,” Jeter stated.

The occasion is the primary at a District 50 faculty, however students beforehand participated in a Unified Sports Day at Lander University.

About 15 Lander students within the Council for Exceptional Children pupil group volunteered to assist out on the occasion.

Carol Hoyle, SPED coordinator for instructor education at Lander, stated the occasion provides the Lander students a chance to get expertise in service and advocacy for students and have enjoyable with the youngsters.

For the students themselves, the day provides them the chance to take pleasure in sports activities, meet others and work together, she stated.

“It gives them a chance to just do those sports, be out there and have fun and just enjoy fun things,” she stated.

Jeter thanked the Emerald athletic management, district administration, academics and volunteers who helped make the day attainable.

There are plans for one other Unified Sports Day within the spring, and Jeter stated he’s seeking to construct a relationship with the Special Olympics for the longer term.
