‘Embrace food security through agriculture’

A commissioner within the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof. Tunde Babawale, has referred to as on youths to embrace the plan of boosting food security through agriculture.

Babawale made this name on Thursday, through the Youth Agricultural Empowerment convention, held in Surulere.

He stated, “Food production is key to sustenance and survival; therefore I want to urge all participants in this programme to embrace the agenda of food security through agriculture. Low productivity which is a current challenge stems from lack of interest in farming and insecurity.”

The Managing Director, Vinemond Farms, Mr Niyi Olukoya, added that insecurity was one of many largest challenges threatening food security within the nation.

“The reality is that insecurity needs to be addressed in this sector. Sometimes we have to rely on community guards with cutlasses who help us wade through the farms to protect us. But the future of this country is bright with more youths in the sector to cultivate newer ideas and boost the economy,” he stated.

The Executive Director, Africa Bridge Initiative, Mr Taiwo Opeoluwa, stated, “Agriculture is the future of Nigeria, and the reason is because it is the answer to the unemployment challenge facing about 60 million youths in the country. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has made great strides in this regard.”
