On Sunday afternoon a myriad of excited canine, many dressed of their most interesting, trotted into Auckland’s St Matthew-in-the-City for the annual Blessing of the Animals.
The aisles in the central metropolis cathedral, had been to shut to full as the canine waited for the blessing to be bestowed upon them.
The service has been going down for over 20-years, however Covid-19 had brought about the pervious two years ceremonies to be cancelled.

St Matthew-in-the-City priest Linda Murphy stated this 12 months’s service had been a lot smaller than in the previous.
“Often we have had a much bigger service, with a wider variety of animals – cats, farm animals, amphibians,” she stated.

Both ladies loved the service, however seeing Saffy obtain the blessing was the better part, stated Angelina.
“I think she [Saffy] was a bit afraid of the priest, she got shy when she was up there.”

For many, like Rosie it was the first time that they had attended the “very special” service.
It was the first time Sandra Murphey had attended the annual Blessing of the Animals.
“Animals are such a blessing, and they give you so much love and joy in your life.”
Murphey attended the service along with her three canine Phoebe, Oscar and Rosie.
“Its such a nice event, you get to see other people and engage with the community.”
