Former ChristenUnie celebration chairman Piet Adema has been named as the new agriculture minister, succeeding Henk Staghouwer.
The appointment of Adema, 57, was confirmed on Monday, 4 weeks after Staghouwer determined he was ‘not the right person’ for the job after 9 months in workplace. He was the primary minister to resign from Mark Rutte’s fourth cupboard.
As agriculture minister his primary function will probably be to attract up plans for the way forward for the farming trade, which is dealing with extreme cutbacks to fulfill legally binding targets on nitrogen compound emissions.
The process of deciding which farmers – notably within the livestock sector – should surrender work and the way they are going to be compensated, both by way of voluntary or obligatory purchases, falls to a special minister, Christianne van der Wal.
‘Farming has a future in this country,’ Adema mentioned. ‘Yes, things will have to be done differently and most livestock holders, arable farmers, gardeners and fishermen know that and want it too. But they need clarity, reassurance and security for the future.’
Staghouwer was criticised by MPs in the summertime for failing to spell out a transparent imaginative and prescient for the way forward for the trade, whereas there have been rumours he struggled to take care of resistance to his plans from inside his division.
He complained of being sidelined throughout the cupboard, a sense which intensified when troubleshooter Johan Remkes was appointed to guide talks between the federal government and farmers geared toward resolving their variations over the nitrogen targets.
