STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Galina Surman fostered her love of nature rising up in Russia. Alongside her husband, Eugene, she would take lengthy hiking journeys and marvel at elements of life usually unseen. Her daughter, Luba Surman, mentioned her mom was “really able to find wonder in very mundane little things.”

That ardour was carried along with her when she immigrated to the United States from Moscow in 1992. Soon after, Galina Surman set roots on the South Shore of Staten Island with two younger youngsters and started elevating her household. The borough’s parks turned a sanctuary for her.
