The shelter was in want of some upgraded space, and boy did they get that space.
“The dogs have indoor-outdoor access, we have get-to-know courtyards and meet-and-greet rooms for the public to interact with an animal of their choice,” Leah Lewis, Midland Animal Services manager, said. “We have cat condos where the cats can roam freely and interact with each other. We have a surgical suite so we can perform sterilizations on animals adopted from the facility.”
The new shelter additionally has a wall crammed with photos of cats and canine adopted from the shelter, like Track.
“Well, Track has come so far, from us bringing him home as a little distemper dog,” Natalie Castillo, Track’s mom, said. “We got him right before Christmas, and it really was so touch and go with him. He would just have these fits of wheezing and coughing. You know for a week we just really weren’t sure. I didn’t even get him a collar yet, because I didn’t know if he was going to make it.”
The shelter’s workers knew with the suitable household, Track wouldn’t simply get higher, he would get his collar.
“There have been some medical considerations there, and he was being handled, so we have been hopeful he would reply positively and make a full restoration, which he did,” Lewis mentioned. “So we’re ecstatic he’s right here with us at this time and successful story.”

“It’s emotional to be able to see that transformation in something that is so sick and almost beyond hope, who would have surely been euthanized as soon as I left, to the dog he is now,” Castillo said. “Now his picture’s up on the wall and it’s great to see that transformation in the animal and the transformation that our city has made towards pets to creating this shelter.”
While the new shelter might need all of the bells and whistles, there may be lots of clean space on the partitions. Blank space simply ready to be stuffed.
“We have much more room, so we hope folks will come and see us,” Lewis mentioned.
The new constructing formally opens on Oct. 18.
