Dec. 21, the winter solstice, has come and gone. We have but to have a giant snow storm at decrease elevations however there are many winter situations within the mountains.
My associates Sue Coonrod, Wendy Patunoff and I took a leisurely hike up Poke-O-Moonshine Mountain this previous week to take a look at the path. We opted on a loop, planting a automobile on the Observer’s trailhead and ascending the Ranger path. At the trailhead we slipped on our microspikes, which stayed on the whole hike.
All three of us have been pleasantly shocked on the situations. Was there ice? Yep. There was however simply on the ordinary, well-known spots. The remainder of the path was granular snow the place our spikes had nice traction.
Near the summit, the bushes have been flocked with stunning snow giving a winter wonderland really feel. The firetower was encased with barbs of frost as have been all of the bushes on high. We had the summit all to ourselves and with no wind we have been in a position to keep some time to benefit from the views.
Back on the automobile we have been excited to plan our subsequent hike, hopefully readying ourselves for some unimaginable journeys to the excessive peaks this coming 12 months.
On a facet observe, do not let the situations on lesser peaks idiot you. It is full blown winter within the Adirondack High Peaks with loads of snow and ice. Pack accordingly, and have enjoyable.
Wishing every and everybody a really Happy New Year and an exquisite 2022.
