Due to a late harvest and adversarial climate situations, the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) is extending the 2021 H2Ohio Program deadline for planting overwintering cover crops, together with these following small grains, and manure incorporation.
H2Ohio producers enrolled in any of the 24-county space can have till Nov. 1, 2021 to plant their overwintering cover crops and full all manure incorporation necessities.
ODA recommends to regulate seeding charges to cut back to the chance of planting failure. According to the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) Appendix A, seeding charges must be elevated by 20%.
For manure incorporation, all H2Ohio practices have to be met. Additionally, necessities established within the nutrient administration commonplace (NRCS 590) have to be adopted. Producers are required to cut back software charges of manure to replicate soil moisture situations, per NRCS 590. Manure software on moist soils will increase the potential for runoff.
In the primary 12 months of the H2Ohio Program, 1,800 farmers enrolled greater than 1 million acres of cropland within the focused 14 counties: Williams, Fulton, Lucas, Defiance, Henry, Wood, Paulding, Putnam, Hancock, Van Wert, Allen, Hardin, Mercer, and Auglaize. With the current growth, all 24 counties within the Western Lake Erie Basin at the moment are included within the H2Ohio Program.
Governor DeWine launched H2Ohio in November 2019 as a long-term, data-driven water high quality plan to cut back dangerous algal blooms, enhance wastewater infrastructure, and deal with lead contamination in Ohio. The initiative is a collaboration involving ODA, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, Lake Erie Commission and different environmental, agricultural and academic companions. It is the primary complete state program that addresses all points of water high quality.
