Real home: this tired Victorian living room is now a nature-inspired haven

Putting a fashionable stamp on a Victorian property is by no means a straightforward feat, and when Veronica and Darren purchased their terraced home, it clearly required utterly updating. ‘It needed replastering throughout but the upstairs rooms were most urgently in need of renovation,’ says Veronica. ‘Six months later, having renovated three bedrooms and a bathroom, we were ready to start on the sitting room.’

The couple had been on a tight price range and eager to save cash wherever doable, in order that they had been ready to do the adorning and another small jobs themselves. ‘But certain work needed doing that meant we had to get various tradesmen in,’ says Veronica. This included a damp-proof course, replastering and putting in new radiators. ‘One of our must-haves was a woodburner to replace the old gas fire, which was basically ornamental – it gave out little heat,’ says Veronica. ‘We also replaced the shabby windows and ordered shutters online, which we fitted ourselves.’
