Walter Gratzer, a biophysicist with a distinguished analysis profession, who died on 20 October on the age of 89, was for a few years additionally a author for and adviser to Nature. In 1967, then-editor John Maddox provided Walter a place on the journal on the advice of eminent biochemist Paul Doty, with whom Walter had been a postdoc at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Walter turned down the chance in favour of persevering with his analysis at King’s College London (see go.nature.com/2ydpvyn).
