LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Kentucky Senate Education Committee handed Senate Bill 1 on Thursday, which might give the state’s district superintendents the ultimate say when it comes to hiring principals and deciding curriculum.
Right now, Kentucky is the one state within the nation that offers that power to school-based, decision-making councils (SBDMs). Supporters of the bill argue superintendents are those being held accountable for college efficiency, so they need to be allowed to make these large selections.
“The collaboration and the enter is the important thing,” mentioned Dr. Sally Sugg, superintendent of Shelby County Schools. “And I feel, on the finish of the day, somebody has to have that closing say by means of collaboration and thru working with all of these teams. I consider that needs to be the superintendent after which, in the end, the college board.”
Opponents, together with the Kentucky Education Association, mentioned the bill would restrict the authority of oldsters and academics.
The committee handed the measure 9-1. It now goes to the complete Senate for a vote.
